Fasting
The Behaviour of the Messenger (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) in the Last Ten Nights of Ramadaan
On the Authority of ‘Aa’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, who said: “When the last ten nights would enter, Allah’s Messenger (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) would stay up throughout the night, awaken his family, become intense (in worship) and tighten his mi’zar (lower garment).” (Agreed upon)
What is intended here is: The last ten nights of Ramadaan. Mi’zar is: the Izaar. Meaning: to withdraw from women. And it is said that the intended meaning is: Girding himself up for worship. It is said: “I tightened my mi’zar for this matter.” Meaning: I girded myself and secluded myself for it.
Explanation
The author (an-Nawawee) may Allaah have mercy upon him, said in what he has transmitted from ‘Aa’ishah the daughter of Abu Bakr as-Siddeeq, may Allaah be pleased with them both, concerning the state of Allah’s Messenger ﷺ during the last ten nights of Ramadhaan, that when he entered the last ten nights he would tighten his mi’zar, stay awake throughout the night, intensify his worship, and gird himself upon it, prayer and peace be upon him.
It has already preceded concerning the preceding Hadeeth that he ﷺ used to stand in the night until his ankles would become swollen and that he would stand more than half the night or half the night or one third of the night. As for in the last ten nights of Ramadhaan, he would stand the whole night, meaning he would stay awake for the entire night, prayers and peace be upon him, in worship. However, with the breaking of the fast after the setting of the sun, dinner and the ‘Ishaa prayer, and the things which he, ﷺ saw as a means of nearness to Allaah the Mighty and Majestic. The meaning of it is not that he would spend the entire night praying. The evidence is that Safiyah bint Huyay ibn Akhtab used to come to him, ﷺ and he would speak to her. However everything which he ﷺ would do during those nights – it was a means of nearness to Allaah the Mighty and Majestic; either the prayer, preparing for the prayer, or other than it.
In this is an evidence that the Messenger ﷺ would stay awake for all of the last ten nights of Ramadhaan, but he would not stay awake for other nights besides them. Meaning, he would not stand until the morning except in the last ten nights of Ramadhaan; and that was in search of Laylatul-Qadr, and it is a night that is in the last ten nights of Ramadhaan; particularly, in the last seven from it. This is the night in which Allah, the Glorified and Exalted, decrees what will be within that year. It is as Allaah said:
“…better than one thousand months.” [Sooratul-Qadr, 97:3]
So he would stay awake for it.
“Whoever stands on Laylatul-Qadr out of eemaan and seeking the reward from Allaah, then forgiven for him is that which has preceded of his sins.” (Al-Bukharee)
Then the author, may Allaah have mercy upon him, mentioned the meaning of the statement: “…tighten his mi’zar.”
From them (the scholars) is he who says: It means to abandon women; because he was in a state of I’tikaaf. Women are not permissible for the one doing Al-I’tikaaf; as the Exalted has said:
“And do not have sexual relations with them while you are in a state of I’tikaaf in the mosques.” [Sooratul-Baqarah, 2:187]
And from them (the scholars) is he who says: Rather, it means seriousness and girding one’s self upon righteous action. Both matters are correct. For the Messenger ﷺ would not come to his family in the last ten nights of Ramadaan because he was in a state of I’tikaaf. He would also tighten his mi’zar, strive hard and gird himself ﷺ upon good. This is from the types of struggling against the soul. So it is obligatory that the person struggle against his soul in the virtuous times so that he uses them in obedience of Allah.

Golden Words of advice for Ramadhaan
Question: What words of guidance do you have for the Muslim ummah, on the occasion of the month of Ramadhaan?
Response: In the name of Allaah, all praise is to Allaah alone, and may Allaah send prayers and salutations upon our Prophet ﷺ and his family and his companions and whoever is guided (aright) by his guidance. To proceed:
PREPARATION OF THE WINNERS IN RAMADAN
"The Winners in Ramadan" by Sh. Ibrahim ad-Duwaysh
The following is a reminder of some matters that help one to be among the winners in Ramadan by using its days and nights properly. “Remind, for indeed reminding benefits the believers.” (51:55)
1. Mujaahadah: struggling against the nafs
“As for those who strive hard in Our Cause, We will surely guide them to Our Paths.” (29:69)
Do you want guidance? Do you want steadfastness? Struggle against your soul, for if we bring ourselves closer to Allah, Allah will come closer to us.

How the Prophet Fasted In Ramadaan
The Prophet ﷺ would not begin fasting Ramadaan until there was a verified sighting of the crescent indicating the month or with the testimony of two trustworthy Muslim witnesses or just one witness. But when there was no sighting or testimony or the night of the thirtieth day of Sha’baan was cloudy and the crescent could not be sighted, he would complete thirty days for Sha’baan and then fast after that.
He ﷺ would forbid that a Muslim fast a day or two days prior to the start of Ramadaan out of precaution, unless those days coincided with days he normally fasted.
He ﷺ would not break his fast until directly after the disk of the sun had disappeared. And he would order his Companions to hasten in breaking their fast. And he would break his fast before praying (the Maghrib prayer). He would break his fast with fresh dates. If he didn’t find them, then with old dates, and if he didn’t find them, then with sips of water. When breaking his fast, he would say: "The thirst has gone, the veins have moistened and the reward is certain, if Allaah wills." [Dhahaba Adh-Dhama’u wabtallatil-‘urooqu wa thabatal-ajr in sha Allaah]
When he ﷺ would travel in Ramadaan, he would either fast or beak his fast and his Companions would choose between the two. So they would hold that whoever had energy and fasted then that was good and whoever was weak and broke his fast, then that was good.
Supplication during the Night of Decree
Taken from Tafsir of Surat Al Qadr (The Night Of Power) - Tafsir Ibn Kathir
It is recommended to supplicate often during all times, especially during the month of Ramadan, in the last ten nights, and during the odd nights of it even more so. It is recommended that one say the following supplication a lot:
"O Allah! Verily, you are the Oft-Pardoning, You love to pardon, so pardon me."
"Allaahumma Innaka 'Afuwwun Tuhibbul-'Afwa Fa'affoo 'annee."
This is due to what Imam Ahmad recorded from Aishah that she said "O Messenger of Allah! If I find the Night of Al-Qadr what should I say?" He صلى الله عليه وسلم replied,
Say : "O Allah! Verily You are the Oft-Pardoning, You love to pardon, so pardon me." [Ahmad 6:182]
At-Tirmidhi, An-Nasai and Ibn Majah have all recorded this Hadith . At-Tirmdhi said "This Hadith is Hasan Sahih" . [Tahfat Al-Ahwadhi 9:495, An-Nasai in Al-Kurba 6:218, and Ibn Majah 2:1265]
Al-Hakim recorded it in his Mustadrak (with a different chain of narration) and he said that it is authentic according to the criterial of the two Shaykhs (Al-Bukhari and Muslim).
[Al-Hakim 1:530] An Nasai also recorded it. [An-Nasai in Al-Kubra 6:219]
